Israel nació en 1948 sin agua, sin petróleo, sin tierras fértiles y rodeado de conflictos.
Quintana Roo nació con playas, biodiversidad, conectividad aérea y una marca turística global. Paradójicamente, hoy Israel es una potencia tecnológica y Quintana Roo sigue siendo, casi exclusivamente, un estado hotelero.
Israel entendió algo que nosotros aún no: el verdadero recurso estratégico del siglo XXI no es la tierra ni el clima, sino la información, la energía y el talento. Por eso invierte cerca del 5% de su PIB en investigación y desarrollo, el porcentaje más alto del mundo. México invierte apenas 0.3%.
Hoy más del 50% de las exportaciones israelíes provienen del sector tecnológico, con más de 9,000 startups activas y la presencia directa de Google, Amazon y Microsoft como nodos regionales de datos.
Quintana Roo enfrenta limitaciones reales en agricultura, ganadería e industria pesada. Pero tiene una oportunidad histórica en la economía digital. El sur del estado podría convertirse en un hub regional de centros de datos, almacenamiento en la nube y manufactura ligera de servidores para atender a la península, Centroamérica y el Caribe.
No hablamos de fantasía: un solo data center de nivel internacional requiere inversiones de entre 200 y 500 millones de dólares, genera cientos de empleos con salarios que triplican al promedio turístico y crea derrama económica permanente.
Para lograrlo se requieren cuatro verdades incómodas: energía estable y barata, fibra óptica internacional, seguridad jurídica y capital humano tecnológico. Hoy Quintana Roo depende en más del 85% de su PIB del turismo, mientras tiene uno de los mejores niveles de radiación solar del país, superior incluso al promedio europeo.
Sin infraestructura digital y energética, seguiremos exportando clima e importando futuro.

Quintana Roo was born with beaches, biodiversity, air connectivity, and a global tourism brand. Paradoxically, today Israel is a technological powerhouse, while Quintana Roo remains almost entirely a tourism-dependent economy.
Israel understood what we still struggle to accept: the most valuable resources of the 21st century are data, energy, and talent. That is why it invests nearly 5% of its GDP in research and development, the highest rate in the world.
Mexico invests barely 0.3%. Today more than 50% of Israeli exports come from the tech sector, with over 9,000 active startups and global giants such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft operating regional data hubs.
Quintana Roo has real limitations in agriculture and heavy industry, but it holds a strategic opportunity in the digital economy. Southern Quintana Roo could become a regional hub for data centers, cloud storage, and server manufacturing, serving the Yucatán Peninsula, Central America, and the Caribbean.
A single international-grade data center requires investments of 200 to 500 million USD, generates high-paying permanent jobs, and creates long-term economic value.
To achieve this, four uncomfortable truths must be faced: reliable energy, international fiber connectivity, legal certainty, and technological talent. Today over 85% of Quintana Roo’s GDP depends on tourism, despite having one of the highest solar radiation levels in Mexico.
Without digital and energy infrastructure, we will continue exporting climate and importing the future.
